Hendrix College has received a $2 million challenge grant to support its residence hall renewal efforts.

The challenge grant was provided by the Mabee Foundation, a nonprofit that provides grants to fund new construction, building renovations and to purchase major medical equipment. Established in 1948, the foundation has distributed more than $1.2 billion in grants to projects in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas.

Hendrix will utilize the grant funding to launch the Residence Hall Renewal Project, including the renovation of the Martin and Veasey Halls. This project, which is slated to begin in May 2021, is projected to cost $9.2 million.

As part of the Mabee Challenge, Hendrix will be required to raise $1.7 million by April 14, 2022.

“We are so grateful to the Mabee Foundation for its longtime support. This challenge grant will be a critical catalyst for completing the renovation of two historic residence halls that hold a special place in the hearts of Hendrix alumni and are absolutely integral to the campus experience of our students,” Hendrix president Ellis Arnold said in a statement. “We are honored by the confidence and support of the Mabee Foundation. Throughout the years, their generosity has enhanced the academic and residence life experience for every student at Hendrix.”

The residence hall project is part of Hendrix’s larger $150 million ‘A Time to Lead’ campaign.
