Demolition of a section of the Mall at Turtle Creek in Jonesboro is set for March.

According to a letter from Chicago-based mall owner Brookfield Properties, an unsalvageable portion of the building, which was damaged in a March 2020 tornado, will be demolished beginning March 15 The “red zone,” or the unsalvageable portion of the building, extends from the eastern edge of a former Victoria’s Secret store to the existing Dillard’s location.

The City of Jonesboro received notice of the demolition plans on Friday, Feb. 12, at 4:15 p.m., according to a news release from Mayor Harold Copenhaver’s office.

“The most important part is step one, which is removing the immediate danger presented by the hardest hit area that has been sitting, blighted, for almost a year,” Copenhaver said in a statement. “This is letter is another encouraging sign that this area of commerce will be servicing the residents again.”

As part of this demolition effort, Brookfield plans to raze and remove the debris. Further plans were not revealed in the release.

The news of the demolition plans comes after Copenhaver, who came into office in January 2021, called on the mall owners to make progress on the facility’s rehabilitation. Copenhaver, along with members of his administration and mall general manager Rick Jackson, toured the mall in January. He announced that there had been “insufficient” progress made on the mall since an EP-3 tornado ripped through the building on March 28, and Jonesboro code enforcement officer Michael Tyner issued a letter to Brookfield Properties, declaring the building to be a public hazard.

In a statement at the time, Copenhaver said that part of the building would likely have to be razed due to its deteriorated condition.
