Preserve Arkansas announced three properties made its Most Endangered Places list in 2021.
Every May, the North Little Rock-based preservation organization releases a list of the most endangered places throughout the state for Arkansas Heritage Month. The nonprofit, founded in 1981, advocates for the preservation of these endangered places and other historic sites.
The 2021 list included the Pike-Fletcher-Terry House in Little Rock, War Memorial Golf Course in Little Rock and the Dr. Robert George Williams House in Parkdale.
Built in 1840, the Pike-Fletcher-Terry House is a Greek-Revival structure that has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972. The residence was built by Civil War General and lawyer Albert Pike and has been occupied by several notable Arkansans, including U.S. Congressman David Dickson Terry, according to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas.
War Memorial Golf Course, which is also listed on the National Regiser of Historic Places, is the oldest municipal golf course in Little Rock.
The Dr. Robert George Williams House, located in Ashley County, was formerly the home of a notable local physician and civic booster.
In 2020, five properties made Preserve Arkansas’ Most Endangered Places list. These sites included the Magnolia Cemetery in Helena, the Old Pocahontas High School/Old Rock Building in Pocahontas, the Henry Brothers Store in Jacksonville, Plummer’s Station in Plumerville, and the Bank of Carthage in Carthage.
Preserve Arkansas has published the Most Endangered Places list since 1999. The list is designed to “raise awareness of historically and architecturally significant properties facing threats such as demolition, deterioration and insensitive development,” according to the nonprofit.
